review: Note to self: the next time you think to yourself, "Oh, I'll get there early", get there an hour even earlier than THAT, 'cause chances are, you're not gonna be as early as you think. This is the lesson we learned tonight as we walked down the street to our favorite record store, Sonic Boom, for a free all-ages in-store performance by the Canadian pop cuties The New Pornographers.

The show started at 11:00 pm, so we figured we'd get there at 10:15, no problem. Ha! The line was crazy! It went all the way down the street, and around the block. Absolutely insane. We didn't think we'd make it in, since the record store is only so big, and there seemed like a gazillion people in line ahead of us.

Amazingly, we DID make it in, but we were all the way in the back. We couldn't see a darned thing, although if I got on my very tip-toes, I could see the top of Carl's infamous red hair. Neko wasn't there, but Carl's cousin stepped in and did a great job. Her voice isn't as unique and distinctive as Neko's, but she hit all the right notes and the harmonies sounded great. Apparently, their drummer Kurt was wearing a never-seen-before-by-us Sloan t-shirt (spotted by Sloan-fan-extraordinaire Chris), but alas, I was too short to see. If I crouched just right, I could make out the band in the reflection of the storefront windows, but that was kind-of pushing it...

But you know, despite all the craziness, they were still so much fun, and they sounded awesome! I was so blown-away by how great they sounded, playing a tiny record store! They opened with the title track of their new CD, Twin Cinema (which was going on sale at midnight, right after the band finished playing), followed by another new song, and then they actually did "Its Only Divine Right" from 2003's Electric Version, which kinda took me by surprise! I figured since it was a record release midnight sale show, it would be all songs from the album in question. I was pleasantly wrong! They did play mostly new stuff, like "Jackie, Dressed In Cobras" (which has the most killer keyboard riff) and "Sing Me Spanish Techno", but then they closed out with a request from the audience, from their debut album Mass Romantic, "The Body Says No"! Wow! So definitely worth the wait! (janice 08.05)
