review: So, since I ran here from the
Joseph Arthur show, I sadly missed
The Mines, who, thank goodness, are local, so I can hopefully catch them another time! Chris Mac sent me one of their MP3's and I thoroughly loved it! It's kinda like
Pinback meets
Q And Not U, or something. But I did get there in enough time to see my fabulous friends and get a chance to catch up with everyone! So serious yay to that!!! : D
Tullycraft: "We tried to play this song in practice...huh, "practice"...if that's what you wanna call it..." Sean joked from the stage. And, fine, true, if you wanna be picky, they did sound a little ramshackle! Add to that the broken wrist of their guitarist Harold, and you definitely have the makings of a bad show...but,no, IT WAS AWESOME!!! : D I had so much fun and was so glad they just happened to be playing on my birthday! (They took the stage right around 12:01 a.m. Sunday, October 13th, yay to me!)
And holy moly, they played for like 90 minutes, or more that night! It was
sooo much more fun than their last show at the
EMP, 'cause the Sunset Tavern is pretty big, so we were all able to bounce and dance along freely. Chris kept breaking strings that night. I think he must've broken like three strings? So Sean kept having to sing the "Chris Is Breaking Strings Again" song. But after the last one, he was like, "Ok, I can only sing that song so many times!" and ended up just throwing out candy instead!!! How fun! And even though Harold's wrist was in a cast (he broke it in a skateboarding accident), he still came up and played on like three songs. (My friend Shane was drooling over how cute Harold is all night!)
Lessee, they played
sooo many songs, but among them were "Superboy & Supergirl" (with the audience singing along to
every word), "Radio Theme" (
twice again! like when we saw them at the
Magic Marker party!), oh, and they closed the night out with a rousing rendetion of "Twee"! We did NOT want them to leave the stage!! The entire audience was just screaming for them to keep playing and playing (with some guy in the audience shouting out, "But it's
BALLARD!"). Finally Sean just had to say, "Look people! We have no more songs! That's it! Please go home!" Yay! What a fun birthday show! : )
