best in show
starring christopher guest • comedy • 2000 • rated pg-13

plot summary: Another "mockumentary" from the brilliant Christoper Guest (This Is Spinal Tap, Waiting For Guffman). This story gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the Mayflower Dog Show, and the different folks who come together with their dogs. Once again, the dialogue is mostly improvised.

review: We were going to see Noni's new film "Lost Souls" on my birthday (because, hey, it's Noni!), but I was in such a giddy mood that I didn't want to deal with a scary film. (Of course, had I have known at the time how weak "Lost Souls" is...but I digress...) So, instead we saw Best In Show which perfectly complemented my exubriance that night! : )

Much like Guest's aforementioned other projects, the characters in this movie are quirky, but endearing. And once again, each actor infuses so much character and personality into their portrayals. My favorite character was Guest's own Harlan Pepper, a sweet Southern gentleman from North Carolina with a loving relationship with his Bloodhound, Hubert. But really, all the characters are wonderful. I was happy to see the fabulous 46-year-old Catherine O'Hara playing the flirtatious, sexy Cookie Fleck, and Eugene Levy turns in another mild-mannered performance as her husband, Gerry. And Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock cracked me up as the uptown yuppie couple who met at Starbucks...on opposite streets. : )

Those involved in the film feel it's more accessible than Waiting For Guffman because it's about dogs, and who doesn't love dogs?! Personally, I know it definitely played on my heartstrings because I'm such an animal-lover! But the story is really about these wacky pet owners.

What more can I really say? With the Guffman-crew, you know you can expect more deadpan, sneaky humour. If that's your bag, then get yourself to the theater! ;) (janice.98)
