cannibal: the musical
starring trey parker, matt stone • comedy • 1996 • rated r

review: When our friend, Jennifer, invited Mike and I to see "Cannibal: The Musical" with her in Austin, I have to admit that I was hesitant. After all, if I can't see the humor in a Chick-Fil-A ad campaign about people eating cows , how could I laugh at people being eaten? Well, lord knows that I did laugh...a lot.

Cannibal: The Musical is the first film from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, those now-famous South Park and Baseketball stars. (Click here for my Baseketball review...gee, what is this? The Trey Parker/Matt Stone fan page?) The film is based on the true story (yes!) of a man named Alfred Packer, the only man to ever be convicted of cannibalism in United States history. Narrated to a reporter, Packer's story unfolds from behind bars where he awaits conviction. Packer (portrayed hysterically by the wild-eyed Parker) tells of an ill-fated mining trip where he led fellow gold-miners into Colorado territory in the 1870's. Unfortunately, treacherous weather conditions, misdirections and the theft of Packer's beloved horse sends the expedition into madness. Gee, can you guess what happens next? (Hint: the title of the movie? Come on...)

The expedition consists of seven men, including Matt Stone as a nerdish young man and the short guy from Baseketball (and I truly feel badly for not knowing this actor's name). As they continue their journey to Colorado territory, the men encounter life-threatening situations...and then narrate them with toe-tapping songs!

Yes, as the title of the film also states, this is a musical! ("Oklahoma" is reportedly Parker's all-time favorite film.) As you leave the theater, just see if you can keep from singing any of the well-written seven songs from the film to yourself, like the wonderful "Spedoinkle," the hysterical "Let's Build A Snowman" or "Hang The Bastard." Despite the cheesiness of the songbook, the songs are surprisingly well-written and well-performed! Trey Parker is such a talented guy! Really!

So, if you get a chance to see this movie, I suggest that you do so. (janice.98)
