punch drunk love
starring adam sandler, emily watson • comedy/drama • 2002 • rated r

plot summary: Adam Sandler plays Barry Egan, a meek, mild-mannered small business owner who is the only boy in a family of seven sisters who berate him and keep his self-esteem low. But then he meets Lena (Emily Watson) and (sniffle, sniffle)...falls in love! (:::bawwwwwl!:::)

review: I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this movie! I've already mentioned a little on the site already how the movie makes me cry. It's almost ridiculous! But I just love it so, so, so much! I'm such a sucker for a love story, but at the same time, I don't like being pandered to either. This is very sweet, but also has a darker side to it.

Adam Sandler is amazing in this! He's soo freaking great, I just can't believe it. I mean, I liked him in The Wedding Singe and I liked him in Mr. Deeds...does this mean I'm becoming an "Adam Sandler" fan? Could it be? But he is so good in this role. He has the perfect blend of sweet naif and psycho going, and it works to amazing effect here.

Also, Emily Watson is such a little angel in this movie! So sweet and so adorable, but for goodness sakes, I wish she'd wear a bra. And look, it's Mary Lynn Rajskub, the cutie from Mr. Show! She's also great as one of Barry's over-bearing sisters, and the one who introduces him to Lena.

So, unlike other PT Anderson movies, this one clocks in at a manageable 90-or-so minutes long. But it's still got the weird, surrealism of his other films. The sub-plot involving the pudding, and the other sub-plot involving the 1-900-sex phone call, are bizarre and riveting. But really, it's just so sweet. So wonderfully, warm-heartedly sweet. Go see it. Take me with you when you go. :)

P.S. An interesting trivial tidbit: Jeremy Blake, the artist who did the color bars in PDL also did the cover of Beck's "Sea Change" album! Neat! (janice.11.02)
