Although this release is primarily of interest to pop archivists/completists, there's also plenty to recommend this to the casual listener. Action Now was a short-lived jangle-pop outfit out of southern California in the early 1980s that gave birth to another band called The Pandoras. This CD collects Action Now's one and only album release, a compilation track, and an entire live show (performed under the name The Direct Hits) which features a number of unreleased songs and sounds like it was attended by about 6 people. What really distinguishes this is the consistently excellent and catchy songwriting, great energy, and the punky sneer of lead singer Jim Schuster's Paul Weller/Joey Ramone-inflected vocals. Pop nerds will absolutely flip over this, and while the casual listener might not find the lo-fi live tracks essential, this disc is still definitely worth a spin. (mike.01.05)
