american analog set
the fun of watching fireworks • emperor jones records • 1996

American Analog Set are from Texas. (In fact, my-ex-boyfriend/ex-copacetic-writer David went to high school in Hurst with the former-keyboardist and the drummer in the band.) So, as such, they have been damned with exuberant praise in our local freebie entertainment publications. Ouch. Well, this is their first release on Austin's Emperor Jones records, and although it took me a long time to warm up to it, it's really not that bad. The songs are a bit long with droney keyboards and noisy guitars and spacey lyrics. You can hear glimpses of Stereolab and Luna sometimes, and you can liken them to that super band Seely. "Gone To Earth" is really fantastic. But for the most part, the songs sound all the same and the band has nothing too original to offer. It's up to you to decide if that's a bad thing or not!
