argentine
in other fictions • self-released (pehr distro) • 2004

This is a modest album of low-key, downtempo indie rock that didn't immediately impress me, but definitely grew on me and won me over. Argentine are a young Brooklyn-based combo, and I get the feeling they're not a bunch of Williamsburg hipsters or anything like that. They have an original sound with no obvious influences that I can think of. At times they kind of remind me of the quieter Bedhead songs, and occasionally of quieter Sonic Youth songs, though that might have something to do with the fact that the singer sounds like a cross between Thurston and Kim (so maybe this is a boy version of what Coco will end up sounding like). There are some really nice bits in here, like some pretty guitar parts, some really well-placed cello, and some unexpected handclaps. Unfortunately there's also some unwelcome Hammond organ on a couple of tracks--that sound adds an instant hippie flavor which sounds completely out of place here. Aside from that, though, I can't find a lot of fault with this. It's not a "wow, awesome" kind of album, but it comes across as honest and unpretentious, so these guys get a thumbs up from me.
