belle and sebastian
dear catastrophe waitress • sanctuary records • 2003

As you can read below, I became sorta disenchanted with Belle and Sebastian after the release of the so-dull "Fold Your Hands Child..." album. And I'd been hearing nothing but bad things about this latest CD before it even hit the stores, so when Mike received it for his birthday (thanks, Andrew!), I didn't exactly rush to put it in the CD player. But when I finally did, I didn't want to take it out ever!!!

I love 70's am-radio style stuff, and surprisingly enough, this new release embraces that style! The three-part harmonies, the dare-I-say "funkiness" of certain tracks --- it's just so fun and breezy and refreshing! Some of the songs retain the bare-bones folkiness we've come to expect from Stuart Murdoch. Old-school B&S fans will find "Piazza, New York Catcher" and "Lord Anthony" quite familiar. But if you've been waiting for the band to try something new, you might enjoy this new one as much as I do! :) (janice.11.03)

Oh, Belle and Sebastian....I don't know what to say! This band is like a guy that you've just started dating. At first, with "If You're Feeling Sinister" and the singles, I was in love! I was like a giddy girl sitting by the phone, waiting for him to call! The gentle, lilting vocals, killer melodies, sharp lyrics, lovely orchestration - - - there wasn't anything I didn't like about it! But, now that we've been "going out" for a while, I'm starting to lose interest. Listening to their songs is like being on a date with "said guy" and sitting there in awkward silence. "Yes, I believe you did tell me about your brother in the Army." "Um, oh, you already told me about that." "Err, I've heard this one before." Face it, we've run out of things to talk about, and there isn't enough in this relationship to sustain anything! Which isn't to say that Belle and Sebastian aren't still a great band, because they are. I would definitely set them up with a friend. But the shimmer and glow is gone for me. But don't worry, Belle and Sebastian, we can still be friends. (janice.11.00)
