the besties
singer • skipping stones records • 2005

The founders of this Brooklyn-based trio, Marisa and Kelly, have been best friends since second grade, hence the name, and really, what better pedigree could there be for a twee-pop band? What differentiates the Besties from other bands of their ilk is their musical arrangement, with Marisa and Kelly both on keyboards and harmonizing vocals, and college pal Rikki on guitar. Rhythms are all provided by preprogrammed beats on their keyboards. Apart from that, there aren't any real surprises from what you might expect. The songs are clean, jaunty, and catchy, sweet but with a ribbon of wistfulness running through that keeps things from getting too cutesy or cloying. The exception to this is the final song "Theme Song," which is one of those self-referential, name-dropping affairs that seems to be a staple of the indiepop scene (and the only thing that scene has in common with the world of hip-hop, now that I think of it). And with "Pirate Song" and "Zombie Song," the Besties just need to record "Ninja Song" and "Robot Song" for their next album and they'll have all their bases covered. (mike.08.06)
