black spartacus
the seven dreams of the leviathan • asaurus records • 2004

This disc is an eccentric collection of home recordings from Albuquerque, NM's Kevin Hume (with a little help from friends). Its 11 tracks fall into a few different categories. There are ambient drones that range from ominous ("The Lioness") to celestial ("The Droid", which sounds like a very minimal M83 track). There are a couple of upbeat tracks that sound kind of like psychedelic TV game show themes with Hammond organ, handclaps, Herb Alpert-style trumpet, and a chorus of "aaahs." There are a couple of melancholy, cinematic string-quartet pieces: "Watermills" and "The 7th Dream," which recalls "Eleanor Rigby." There are just a few vocal tracks, including the jewel of the disc, "Mysteries of the Deep," a beautiful, folk-tinged lullabye that really shows Hume's talent as a songwriter. The far-flung range of styles make this an odd, unpredictable listen, but there's an overall dreamy quality to it which keeps it from seeming too fragmented, and a number of the tracks are quite interesting and/or lovely.
