black rebel motorcycle club
howl • rca • 2005

I used to amuse myself by calling BRMC "Black Rebel Mary Chain" or "Jesus and Motorcycle Club," alternately, but now they've moved beyond their previous wall-of-fuzz sound to a more songwriterly, blues- and gospel-influenced style, occasionally evoking a rootsier, leather-jacketed version of Spiritualized. Kudos to them for the big gear shift, but for my taste, I still don't dig it very much. There's a handful of tracks that I find listenable ("Fault Line," "Weight of the World," "Sympathetic Noose"), but they are the ones that hew least to their new formula. The one thing I do really like about this record is the echo-heavy production—even when the songs don't work for me, the sound is fantastic. (mike.02.06)
