broadcast
the noise made by people • warp records • 2000

Poor Broadcast. Just because they share management with Stereolab, people are always unfairly writing them off as a Stereolab-wannabe-band. But these amazing musicians from Birmingham, England, deserve a better chance! Sure, they employ the same dreamy, electronica-heavy sound that Stereolab rely on, but Broadcast's songs live in the rainy, dreary streets of England, not in outer space. Personally, I find them more akin to the good ol' days of 4AD Records with bands like This Mortal Coil (with Caroline Crawley on vocals). Apparently, the band went through a grand total of three different producers on this album until they finally decided that to get the job done right they had to do it themselves. And their meticulous craftsmanship really shines through, particularly on the Carnaby-Street-romp of "Come On Let's Go" and the ghostly "Echoes Answer." So, don't write them off as a second-rate Stereolab, because Broadcast are so much more than that and this album definitely paints a picture as to why that is! (janice.11.00)
