casper and the cookies
oh! • happy happy birthday to me • 2004

The Casper & The Cookies track was a highlight on the recent Happy Happy Birthday To Me compilation CD, so I was looking forward to listening to this. As you might guess from the band name, this is some goofy, happy-go-lucky pop. "Casper," according to the band bio, is apparently a bit of a behind the scenes player in the Athens, GA pop scene (think Of Montreal, Elf Power, The Sunshine Fix) when he's not fronting the Cookies. Stylistically the songs here span 3 decades of pop, from 60s Beach Boys sounds to 70s rockin' power pop to 80s New Wave. They're all super catchy and energetic, and I bet these kids are a blast to see live. However, to resort to one of those super-obvious metaphors I'm prone to using, the overall effect of the album for me is like scarfing down a big bag of cookies in one sitting--I end up wishing I had something more nutritive in there as well. As such this isn't quite top-peg material for me, but there's no denying that this is fun stuff, so if you're not allergic to large doses of whimsy, you'll lurve it. (mike.12.04)
