The excellently-named Cat & Dog Dialogue are a duo of Swedes living in Ireland, and they start off the first half of this split CD with their shambling, carnivally, lo-fi living-room pop. It's created mostly with cheapie electric and reed organs with overdubbed, layered vocal harmonies. Some of the tracks are rather experimental: "Dundrum" is like kitchen-sink musique concrète, with random organ bloops and clattering pots & pans, and "Elektrik Leg" is kind of like low-tech drum-n-bass.
The second half of the disc starts with the sleepy fanfare of "Morning" from Californians Red Pony Clock, who are normally a big ensemble which includes our pal Raoul of Extra Credit Crafts. On these recordings they are mostly a duo of Tony & Gabe, but you'd never know from listening! These songs are chock full of instrumentation, and they sound like a big old jamboree at times. Listen to this lineup of sounds you'll hear (in addition to the expected guitar/bass/drums): ukulele, saxophone, trombone, clarinet, xylophone, flute, organ, and marimba. The instruments combine in some old-fashionedy styles, like Dixieland and Hawaiian, and the songs overall have kind of a gently-psychedelic 60s pop sound, particularly on "Mrs. Butter" and "Brother James." It's a fun disc, and the handprinted sleeve is super nice! (mike.11.05)
