Okay, how can you not like a CD titled "Patty Darling" that's dedicated to Patty Donahue of 80's new wave band The Waitresses?
So, yes, these kids are quirky! They kinda remind me of That Dog with lyrics about mullets and lines like "I hate you/In case you didn't know". Songs like "French Kiss Conspiracy" remind me of T.D.'s "Lip Gloss". And the multi-girl vocals and "aah-aaah-aahs" in the background also call to mind Anna, Petra and Rachel of said That Dog.
But the music itself is on the opposite end of That Dog's three-chord rock. In fact, Churchbuilder only has one guitarist. But they've got three keyboardists! Synthesizers and moog back these wacky lyrics, giving these songs an otherworldly Call and Response feel.
But really, I feel the real strength of Churchbuilder is in their lyrics/vocals. I think they should let the guys sing more often, too! When Patrick?/Gabe? pipes up for the first time on "Dreams", his baritone voice against the girls child-like ones reminded me of Calvin singing with Amelia from Heavenly! Classic! And I just love that round towards the end of "Sob Sob" with the two gals echoing the title out. How fun! How wonderful! (janice.04.02)
