clem snide
end of love • spinART • 2005

Oh, Clem Snide! Ya'll are so weird and quirky with your catchy folky pop songs and their twisted lyrics. End of Love is their fifth album, and in this lady's ever-humble opinion, one of their strongest. Their early days were almost too quirky (but don't get me wrong, I still love those early days). And then the band's singer/songwriter Eef Barzelay had to go and get married and have babies, and then the following albums were just too mushy and sensitive. It feels like, with this album, they've finally found a nice balance.

judging a book by its cover: The album cover features a collage of family photos with no band name or album title to be found. It's kind-of an interesting symbol for the album and the band itself; like they've stepped away from being "CLEM SNIDE" and are more about the work, the songs, the stories, the inspirations? Or more likely, I'm reading way too much into it.

most favorite song: Without a doubt, the sunshine-filled, glorious "Fill Me With Your Light"! Regardless of what season it is, or what the weather is like outside, this song always makes it feel like springtime. It makes me want to drive around with all the car windows rolled down. I freakin' love this song.

other winners: The title track with its snarky lyric "And the first thing every killer reads/ is Catcher in the Rye" which literally made me guffaw the first time I heard it. And "Tiny European Cars" is very quaint and pretty with backing female vocals and what sounds like a xylophone, but isn't. (Or atleast, there isn't a xylophone credited in the liner notes!) "Jews for Jesus Blues" is a little more country-hee-haw than I usually enjoy, but the lyrics and Eef's delivery make it such an enjoyable listen!

and the not-so-winners: Without a doubt, "Made for TV Movie"...honestly, I can't even listen to it, and if it's on the radio, I will turn down the volume. Not to sound like Montgomery Burns, but the sound of children singing is like fingernails on blackboard...cringe! (janice.07.05)
