Mmm, noisy, echoey guitar. This album from Brooklyn's Dirty on Purpose kicks off with a swarm of jangle, buzz, and horns, like a shoegaze version of Beulah, on "No Radio." This pretty much encapsulates the band's successful formula: guitar noise aplenty, nicely constructed pop songs, and additional instrumentation like horns, strings, or piano. When the band rocks out, it's careening and driving, as on "Car No Driver" and the instrumental "Monument," and they have some pretty mid-tempo and slower songs, like "Your Summer Dress," the delicate waltz of "Lake Effect," and "Kill Our City," which is reminiscent of Pavement's "Here." Most of the songs feature lilting, androgynous falsetto vocals. This album really hits the sweet spot, and I'll be keeping an eye on this band for sure. (mike.11.06)
