A fellow named Mike, a.k.a. The Elks, sent us this homemade CD-R containing 6 songs in under 11 minutes. It's super-sloppy distorto-pop with lots of mistakes (the drumming completely falls apart on one song) and the recording quality is terrible, but the melodies are pretty decent and there are a few standout moments. "Lazer Ray" has a good New Order-y bit toward the end, and "Shut Down" is reminiscent of 4-track-era GBV or Wolf Colonel. For the most part I thought this was just OK, but listening to it still gave me kind of a warm feeling; somehow it's comforting to know that in this day and age there are still kids out there with 4-tracks bashing out lo-fi home recordings.
