While this isn't something I would typically listen to, I did find it interesting and impressive enough to warrant a mention. First of all, let's get that horrible band name out of the way. OK, done. What we have here is piano-based, melodramatic prog-pop with alto female vocals, like the theoretical mutant child of Ben Folds and P.J. Harvey, or perhaps Yes meets Suddenly, Tammy! Their twisty, complex compositions are impressive and original, and you can see from these oddball combinations I'm coming up with that they don't sound quite like anything I've heard before. The songs shift gears frequently, and you might find jazzy math-rock elements combined with vocal stylings reminiscent of Björk (though singer/keyboardist Evelyn Finch is really more of a vocal ringer for Chan Marshall), or a crazy carnival waltz, or rollicking pop with a fuzzed-out bass part. Frankenixon could easily have slipped into a heavily-incensed kind of feel--any darker and it would be too goth, any proggier and it would be too hippie--but somehow they avoid that pitfall and get the tone just right. This is quite possibly some of the most interesting music to ever come out of Iowa City, Iowa. (mike.12.04)
