the hidden cameras
the smell of our own • rough trade records • 2003

Mike and I heard a few Hidden Cameras songs on KEXP and really liked them. From what I gathered from the DJ-prattle, this Toronto "band" is mostly just one guy named Joel Gibb, kinda akin to Stephin Merritt and Magnetic Fields: he writes all the songs, but has a large group of friends helping out on the songs.

So we finally bought this CD, and on the drive home, I took a good look at the CD cover and it's a good thing I didn't crash the car! Ass! Many men's butts adorn the cover! Yikes! And then I noticed the "Parental Advisory" label on the front, boasting "Sexual Content". Oh, my! I mean, like I said, I'd heard a couple of songs on the car radio, but you don't really delve into lyrics when you're in traffic. So, gee, thank goodness for the booklet where you can read all the lyrics yourself! And the booklet design? I don't even want to know what those "stains" are supposed to be...

Sorry! Anyway, Hidden Cameras have a great, fun, orchestrated-indie-pop feel to them with choral arrangements and harps and stuff, in a sorta Polyphonic Spree fashion. And Joel sings very unabashedly about gay sex. Fun! (janice.11.03)
