human television
look at who you're talking to • gigantic music • 2006

(See below for details on our CD giveaway contest!)

Human Television's first proper full-length is a slice of pure, spine-tingling perfection from the slow, heavy, semi-psychedelic opener "I'm Moving On" to the strings-and-falsetto conclusion of the album-closing title track. In between you've got the transendent jangle of "Ten Minutes," "Mars Red Rust," and "Tonight's the Night," the shoegaze thunder of "Untitled," and 6 other stellar songs full of shimmering guitar magic, buoyant bass lines, and bandleader Billy Downing's youthful yet world-weary vocals. Chords and melody, sound and feeling, all together in perfect confluence. I don't have much else to say except that this swoon-worthy album is one of the finest pop releases of this or any other year. (mike.11.06)

It's your favorite new indiepop band! Well, OK, mine anyway. Human Television pack 7 short, punchy, super-catchy tunes into 17 1/2 minutes on a disc they're calling a mini-album. They go a little heavier here, a little punkier there, but mostly it's the kind of perfect pop that gives you a great fizzy feeling. Crammed with strummy guitars, sprightly leads, and bouncy rhythms (drummer Mario Lopez is not this guy), they conjure the best of the last couple decades of jangly pop sounds, from early Wedding Present (primarily) to Holiday to Preston School of Industry. Frontman Billy Downing's casual vocals come tumbling good-naturedly, sometimes in a rush of words. If you're looking for unfamiliar sounds, you won't find them here, but you will find pop perfection, and you can't argue with that! A definite must-hear. (mike.01.05)
