hussalonia
percy "thrills" hussalonia • self-released • 2004

Hey, here's a nice surprise in our stacks of promos. Hussalonia is a solo recording guy named Jesse Mank. He's got a nutty sense of humor and a love of non-sequiturs--the CD insert touts that the recording is "strictly solo trombone" (which of course it isn't), and the promo package included an elaborately-Photoshopped faux coupon "cross-promoting" the album with Nestle's Strawberry Quik. Very cute. Fortunately he avoids most of the self-indulgence of the home-recorded genre, except for a few sound-collage bits here and there. Mostly there's a lot of the retro-60's, mildly psychedelic, Sgt. Pepper's-worshipping kind of pop sounds you can hear from Elephant 6-style bands like the Apples in Stereo or Of Montreal, leaning in a George Harrison and Elliott Smith kind of direction. The humor surfaces in the lyrics occasionally as well, such as "Theres a hole in my heart / So I click to add to my shopping cart." I'm not 100% enamored of every single song, but there's plenty to like and enough stellar material on here to make this a worthwhile find. (mike.12.04)
