the imprints
sounds of the aftermath • eight ball records • 2005

I would characterize the Portland 5-piece band The Imprints as a Professional Band. Comprised of veteran musicians and led by former Baseboard Heaters leader Rob Stroup (and produced by another veteran musician, Pete Droge), they are a self-described "group of former frontmen" producing very polished, sophisticated, "adult" pop-rock. Not to say that they are adult contemporary or anything like that, but I could easily see them tapped for an opening slot for a once-mainstream alternative rock act like, I don't know, World Party (if they were still around), or perhaps The Posies. The songs here on their debut range from the slightly weird and interesting ("Blister Rays") to the wholly generic ("Long List of No's"), but mostly somewhere right in between. It's all real well done, but this sounds to me like it's more for people who are nostalgic for the sounds of pre-grunge commercial alternative radio (some of which was great, sure, but its time has come and gone).
