instant camera
alive on departure • wall to wall records • 2004

Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, and sounding like they very much wish they were from NYC or the UK, Instant Camera produces the sound of a band trying. Which is not to say that they are bad, or even entirely derivative. Their sound is an interesting amalgam of new wave, post-punk, and surf rock, with a little bit of shoegazer thrown in here and there for good measure. Their place in the contemporary rock spectrum is in the vicinity of Franz Ferdinand (vocals from Neil Dey are particularly Franz-y) or uptempo Interpol, but not nearly as accomplished and with more blatantly retro-80s sounds (hello, synthesizers). There are some lackluster and/or grating tracks, but generally the songs are short and mostly energetic and fairly catchy, if not the most original. This is not a band that is ready to take the world by storm yet, or even release a fully-realized or mature album, but I'd give them another shot if their future sophomore release found its way into our hands.
