KEXP has been caning Junior Boys since their show in October with Mouse on Mars and Ratatat. Everytime I heard one of their songs, I would think, "Gosh, that's a pretty song. I wonder who it is." Then the DJ would come on and tell me that it was Junior Boys and I would think, "I should check out their CD sometime." It wasn't unitl another DJ, a club DJ, a superstar DJ, released his latest album, that I decided that I couldn't live without this album: Sander Kleinenberg released the follow-up to his phenominal Everybody CD (aptly titled Everybody, Too) and the second track blew me out of the water. "Birthday" by Junior Boys sets the tone for the next one hundred forty minutes of introspective, passionate, floor filling dance beats.
So I bought Last Exit, the first North American release by the band. I expected a bit more "Postal Service", but was pleasantly surprised with long, mood-setting tracks. There are probably only four real pop songs on here (the best of which is "Birthday") and the rest of the album reminds me of more dub-influenced Kruder & Dorfmeister.
The album works for me because there is true sincerity underneath the glitchy, electro sound --- and the vocals remind me of Marc Almond. (jeremy.11.04)
