This is the third release from Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience. Long awaited, much anticipated, and well-created...it's a gem.
Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Boe are drawing comparisons to the song stylings of Simon and Garfunkel with this release. It's easy to see why. This CD is packed with melodic folksy lyrics and tremendous harmonies. If you are looking for any of Erlend Øye's hypnotizing dance beats, this is not the record for you. You'll need to pick up his DJ Kicks disc on K7 to get your dance on (great CD, BTW). The track "I'd Rather Dance WIth You" is about as close as you'll come to a beat.
"Misread" is my personal stand-out track. Perhaps it's personal experience, but this one gets me. Lyrics like "If you wanna be my friend/ You want us to get along/ Please do not expect me to wrap it up and keep it there" coupled with perfect instrumentation can't help but tug at the heartstrings. And the addition of Leslie Feist's (of Broken Social Scene fame) vocals on two of the tracks provides a bit of icing for the cake. Pick a quiet evening, place this in your CD changer and take some time to absorb. I bet it won't be come out of there anytime soon. (karen.08.04)
