lois maffeo & brendan canty
the union themes • kill rock stars • 2000

Wow, wow, wow! It is so amazing to have been able to watch Lois mature as an artist over the past decade. From the two-chord strumming of her Courtney Love days to this? She has really, really matured and grown as a songwriter and as a performer. Not only have her lyrics grown (no more "Hey there/Motorcycle Boy") but her vocal range has also improved, into a low, jazzy style. (To give another perspective though, Mike doesn't like her voice...)

On this release, Lois has brought in Fugazi's drummer, Brendan Canty, to lend a hand. At first I was skeptical, but, no, he puts his heavier leanings aside and really adds a beauty and depth to Lois' simple acoustic songs. With his contribution, this release really reaches another plateau of quality! This is radio-friendly, perfectly-crafted stuff here! I could hear this in the background of an episode of "Felicity" or something. Really, really, tremendous stuff . Lois, you should be proud! (janice.11.00)
