Coming from the incestuous and very au courant Montreal indie scene and boasting a very trendy off-kilter pop-dance-post-punk jangle, this 5-piece band presents its debut full-length. They sound like a bunch of other bands that are hip right now, but that's not my main gripe with them. What bugs me is that the lyrics mean absolutely nothing, but are sung with lots and lots of attitude. Every song is composed of random phrases arbitrarily strung together and often repeated. Take this for example: "I wish I could find a blue paper bag of love / Tractor trailer / Tractor trailer / I am faster / I have flavor." I'm not opposed to nonsense or non-sequiturs (I'm a Robert Pollard fan after all), but there's an art to it that these guys lack, and the annoyance is aggravated by the winking swagger of the delivery. Obtuse and snotty might have worked for Pavement, but that's because even at SM's most skewed or whimsical you can tell he had a purpose. It's not clear to me if these guys have anything to say other than "We're hip and zany and in a hip, zany band...ladies?" (mike.06.06)
