luke temple
self-titled e.p. • mill pond records • 2004

Who is this Luke Temple fellow? The lead-off track on this 4-song self-titled EP may trick you into thinking it's a lost rejected Pixies track when it starts out, and it quickly morphs into straight-ahead radio-friendly alt-rock with chunky guitars and a hooky "doodle-doo" chorus. Then, whammo, he's all Nick Drake-influenced sensitive acoustic folk troubador on the remaining 3 tracks. What gives, Temple? His lilting falsetto does seem better suited to the folky style, and his bluesy acoustic fingerpicking is deft. Perhaps this musical split personality shouldn't be too surprising from someone whose bio includes a stint of homelessness while working in a candy shop, followed by 5 years at art school (the perfect environment for perfecting one's navel-gazing technique). I'm impressed with his skill, but personally I'm not sufficiently satisfied by either of his styles to be interested in finding out how he resolves his musical identity crisis. (mike.01.05)
