We've not heard any of the previous releases from Spain's Migala, but here on their latest album, they craft a heady mix of dramatic, mostly instrumental post-rock with a strong arty bent--imagine Mogwai scoring a spaghetti western directed by David Lynch where James Bond is the hero. The cinematic quality is underscored by occasional clips of film dialogue, including a surely-unlicensed sample of Darth Vader on "El Imperio del Mal" (which I think translates to "The Evil Empire"), as well as other sound effects blended into the mix. The CD is accompanied by a DVD of mostly arty, semi-abstract short films/videos for each song, the best of which is the lovely, understated clip for "Your Star, Strangled". The film for the final track, "Lecciones de vuelo con Mathias Rust", features in-studio footage of the band intercut with behind-the-scenes and outtake footage from the other films, which brings a humorous, likable, and human conclusion to something that otherwise could have been a little too pretentious. This album isn't something I would typically seek out on my own, but there's no denying that it's really well-done, evocative stuff, so if this sounds like your cup of tea then I'd definitely give it a high recommendation.
