mike's review: I have to admit that I've dogged on OCM a little in the past, but I find myself really enjoying this recent release from the prolific Jim Rao. He's found a near-perfect blend of lo-fi "drum-n-bliss", hushed indiepop, and sunbaked California-style psychedelia here as he explores inner and outer space. The songs tend to ramble a bit, and they're a little rough around the edges, but rather than detracting, this actually gives them a fresh, warm, organic feel. This is a perfect soundtrack for a lazy summer night stargazing on the roof. (mike.06.02)
janice's review: My first introduction to Orange Cake Mix was Jim's songs on the Four Letter Words compilation, and then I picked up his 1995 album "More Mellow Hits". So, I thought all of Jim's songs were gentle, lilting acoustic numbers, which made me happy. And then I checked out some of his later works, and was truly shocked to hear what had happened: he'd gone all electronica and spacepop! : / But this latest release is truly a gem --- it's the perfect blend of Jim's 70's-a.m. radio influences with the casio-heavy synthpop, and it's wonderful! I couldn't enjoy this CD more! (janice.06.02)
