Spain's Acuarela label releases some interesting sounds from around the world, including this 5-song EP from Rivulets, a.k.a. Nathan Amundson, who is based out of the upper Midwest U.S. and has 2 prior releases on Low's Chair Kicker's Union label. Recorded in Toledo, Ohio, with musical assistance from fellow Chairkicker Jessica Bailiff, the songs here are spare and simple, based mostly on droning, open-tuned acoustic guitar, embellished with echoey atmospherics, some distortion, and an outburst of bashing drums. There's a rough-hewn, almost primitive beauty to the songs, several of which come across like minimalist Nick Drake, especially with Amundson's hushed, tremulous vocals. This was released earlier in the year, but the stark, shivery quality here is perfect for the wintertime. Quite recommended! (mike.12.04)
