sea ray
stars at noon • self-starter foundation • 2003

  • five adjectives that describe them: melodic, dreamy, intricate, shimmery, earnest.
  • who this reminds me of: The Church, a more ethereal Lambchop.
  • you might've seen them: opening for The Stills, or Yo La Tengo.
  • judging a book by its cover: The band photo super-imposed with a glittery water shot gives a pretty good representation of their sound: deep, shimmery music you can drown yourself in.
  • if Sea Ray were your boyfriend: he'd show up for a date wearing a turtleneck sweater, take you to an art gallery opening or a foreign film festival, drink soy chai lattes.
  • instant cool points: their first EP was produced by Tobin Sprout (former GBV-er, and our copacetic kitty's namesake)!

  • These six kids from NYC sure do make some lovely music. It's very elegant and warm --- heck, they even have a cellist on staff, and guest musicians play viola and flute for a pretty orchestral touch. Lead vocalist/guitarist Jordan Warner has an affected style of singing that's very 90's-sounding; it's almost pretentious, but then the way he sings is so sincere that you realize he's not trying to fake sincerity, it's genuine, and frankly, that's part of what makes this CD so engaging for me.
