Along with a terrible band name, Seedy Gonzales have a kind of retro-neo-beatnik sensibility; in other words, their songs reference dead Romantic and Beat authors (lyrically) and Lou Reed (musically). Actually the first track, "Just Killin' Time (Before Time Kills Me)," is straight-up British Invasion, strongly invoking the Kinks and the Beatles. Another thing Seedy Gonzales have is a real wise-ass Warren Zevon-style sense of humor, giving the world lines like "she's got hair just like Bob Marley / she once made it with P.J. Harvey." This 5-song EP is good for a quick chuckle, but overall it's too derivative (and not of much that I like) to fly with me. (mike.02.05)
