First let me say that the music on this CD is great. It's fairly sophisticated-sounding, stylish electronic-based pop, melodic, kind of dancey, kind of loungey...nothing new or groundbreaking, but nice, and the songs are catchy and don't get dull.
But here's the other thing: the lyrics are totally shallow, vapid, and preoccupied with "gettin' it on". Not that there's necessarily anything inherently wrong with that per se; I just prefer more substance backing up my feel-good pop. Stars and United State of Electronica are good examples of bands with a somewhat similar musical bent that have something much more substantive to say. My perceptions here could be colored by the fact that the lead "SFR" guy is the son of the world-famous classical violinist Itzhak Perlman: in other words, he's a rich kid with a famous parent (living in L.A., moreover) who has probably never had to work a day in his life. Perhaps I would have liked this better if he had more to concern himself with than things like hooking up booty calls on his cell phone. (mike.12.04)
