slomo rabbit kick
hortatory examinations e.p. • kittybox records • 2004

Slomo Rabbit Kick's brand of indierock might be described as fuzzed-out nerd-pop, which isn't too surprising since it's the project of Jay Chilcote from The Revolutionary Hydra, one of the nerdiest bands ever. (Jay can also be found in the Dutch Elms.) This is Slomo's second CD, a self-produced and -released 5-song EP.

Jay is the literary type of nerd; I had to look up "hortatory" and found out it means the same thing as "exhortative". These songs aren't really direct calls to action, though. The stated theme here is politics, from the relationship politics of the New Wave-flavored "Two Timing" to the high school politics of the hilariously-titled "Smell Camino" to the lefty "politics" politics of "This Long Parade". Any disgruntled cubicle-dweller can relate to "Man's Routine Is to Work And to Dream", though calling it about office politics might be a bit of a stretch. Lyrically Jay tackles his subjects with superintelligence and witty wordplay, as usual.

Music-wise this is mostly upbeat and peppy in a laid-back sort of way, if that makes any sense. Even barely cracking 3 minutes, the songs here are longer than previous Slomo fare on average, and some of them actually feel long, oddly enough. Jay busts out a fake British accent in seemingly random spots, which seems a little weird, and do I hear a Joy Division influence in "Pseudo-Science"? Overall this is a fun disc and I almost don't even mind that Jay is so much smarter than me. (mike.03.05)
