warm wires
kindness • two ton santa records • 2002 •

These guys name-drop GBV, but in spirit they're a lot closer to CVB--Camper Van Beethoven, that is. But where CVB succeeded by being dry and deadpan, Warm Wires just tries too hard. Their non-sequitur lyrics are supposed to be comedy, but their delivery is so arch, and the wordplay so forced, that most of the time I find myself laughing at them rather than with them, particularly when they try to be shocking, like on "Anything with an Ass", which is basically a list of things with asses (policemen, kittens) and a few without (cupcakes). Um, okay. They're pretty talented musicians, and they do seem to be having a good deal of fun. I don't think I'm really their target audience, though--no disrespect meant, but I think these guys will go over big with college kids who listen to Barenaked Ladies and stuff like that.
