from karen's iPod to your computer screen! • february 2005 edition

In lieu of writing individual reviews, I am just going to be random and mention a few things I have been loving or am continuing to love. Let me add a happy and healthy new year to all of the copacetic family members and visitors!!! Lots of yummy new music on the horizon and still playing on my iPod this year.

Here's the stuff I just can't seem to stop listening to:

  • Psapp - Tiger, My Friend: Really yummy...I hope this is where music is heading.
  • Kings of Convenience - Riot on an Empty Street: I can't stop playing this disc. It's gorgeous! Lucky for us they are coming to the states! Portland, Seattle and Vancouver all get a chance to see them. Seriously sweet music made by adorable boys!
  • Styrofoam - Nothing's Lost: Hard for me to put into words how much I love this release! It's really amazing! Do yourself a favor and buy it. You'll be playing it when you have company over and everyone will want to know what that cool music is!
  • Bent - Ariels (This is another one I can't stop listening to. It's just stunning! Really beautiful! Very appropriate for springtime. Play it while you roam around the city and watch the flowers bloom! It's the ideal soundtrack.

  • Now for some new stuff....

  • Loving "Be Still My Heart" from the Postal Service single We Will Become Silhouettes. A good one for Valentine's Day (yes it's okay to celebrate V-Day, because I have a valentine this year!!!)
  • Madly in love with the new Nouvelle Vague self-titled disc. Super fun covers of great songs like "Melt with You", "Just Can't Get Enough", "Teenage Kicks" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Another one to impress your friends with.
  • Really digging the latest from Shivaree - Who's Got Trouble. The fact that the lead singers name is Ambrosia Parsley should be enough, but it's really a great record. I love it for late night comtemplations.
  • The latest from Matt Pond PA - Winter Songs is becoming a favorite, as well. The cover of "Holiday Road" (ok, all you Vacation fans...) is fantastic! A good one to listen to as the winter winds down!

    Now for the current favorites...

  • Stars - Set Yourself On Fire!: Genius once again from our Canadian friends. I will not go into detail as I would really like to read a review from Janice on this one! [note from janice: it's on its way!!! :)] All I can say is they just get better and better! Cannot wait for the tour!!!!!!
  • L'Altra - Different Days: The disc I am currently telling everyone to buy. This Chicago group makes some of the most underrated and gorgeous music I have ever listened to. This release is truly a treat that will tug at the most jaded of heartstrings! Lindsay Anderson and Joseph Costa's vocals play off each other in wonderful ways that make you anxious for their next release. Is it electronic or indie pop? I really don't care. It's just plain GOOD!

    Now for some random musings...

The new Beck CD sounds great. Lots of new sounds for him. Can't wait for that. New Ivy...need I say more! Final Luna Tour...so very sad. Why change the name of Graceland????? El Corazon??? Is that the best they could do?? Coachella! Yes, I will be attending once again. This time courtesy of my employer! I thought it would be a one time adventure for me last year. 113 degrees and all, but how can I turn down the line up this year? New Order...for pete's sake! I will take pictures for the zine and have a full report! One more tip for everyone. If you don't already know about Other Music in New York, make your acquaintance. Sign up for their weekly new release e-mails and feel like an industry insider. They are fantastic people who run a fantastic store!

Take care everyone! Be nice to each other! (karen.02.05)
