plot summary: Scenes from the Kids' first North American tour together in 2001, with behind-the-scenes glimpses mixed in. This review is covering the DVD release.
review: Anyone who attended the 2001 Kids In The Hall tour surely left with sore faces and split sides from laughing so hard. Sadly, the tour film doesn't have the same results.
Although he's directed episodes of KITH and his last show, NewsRadio, Dave Foley's direction on this full-length just doesn't cut it. The opening scene with the guy-driving-and-talking-to-the-camera seemed really pointless and didn't fit in with the rest of the footage. The pacing was painfully slow. I kept thinking, "How could they possibly make the KITH boring?" but here it was. The sound levels were total crap! One second, we'd be cranking up the volume to catch the dialogue, the next, our ears would be bleeding from the sound. It was the saddest, poorest quality!
As for the footage itself, it wasn't even that interesting. The best scenes were actual footage from the tour. Just watching them, I could feel that same energy and excitement that we felt seeing them live down in Houston, TX back in 2001. Plus, it was cool seeing it all up-close since our seats in Houston were so far back. But the second you're laughing at Simon & Hecubas, they quickly cut away to more backstage footage. Some of the footage is painful to watch, like the dinner scene. You can understand how they split up all those years ago.
I asked a guy at Scarecrow Video about the film, and he said his co-worker delcared the deleted scenes made this worth the purchase. Some were cool (Dave's creepy eye surgery! Kevin eating soup and reading Jane Magazine!), but really, it's not that big of a deal. There's also guest celebrity commentary. We only watched a few: Mike Meyers was totally dullsville, but Trey & Matt from South Park were kinda funny, in a stoner kind-of way.
Sadly, while I think all five boys are really delightful (especially that Kevin), I'd really rather watch their skits than watch them bicker backstage. Oh, well. (janice.05.02)
