So, you're one of those hardcore Belle & Sebastian fans who can't stand the new sound of their new album. May I introduce you to Camera Obscura?
Like B&S, the band is from Scotland. Like B&S, John Peel loves them! (In fact, it was John Peel's Festive Fifty countdown that introduced me to Camera Obscura.) Like B&S, the band is quite big, consisting of seven members. Like B&S, Richard Colburn has played drums for them. Like B&S, their album art will find photography by B&S leader Stuart Murdoch.
And the biggest similarity of them all is their sound: Camera Obscura embrace the breezy folky sound of the 1960's, playing bittersweet pop with cheeky biting lyrics (the chorus to their current single "Suspended From Class" repeats "I should be suspended from class/I don't know my elbow from my arse"). Their arrangements are so lovely with strings, trumpet, mandolin, and "finger clicks" as the liner notes state. And lead vocalist Tracyanne Campbell has a voice so pretty I almost forget about the other female vocalist with the last name "Campbell". ;) (janice.02.04)
