darker my love
darker my love • dangerbird records • 2006

About this album, it pretty much suffices to say that it's heavy acid-shoegazer-rock and it's very good. The band, a four-piece from San Francisco, strikes a good balance between trippy drones and melody. Sometimes they drift a touch too far into the stoner-rock side of the spectrum for me, but they always drift back before they lose me. The best song, "People," sounds like the whole history of Lilys smushed together, which can only be a good thing. This is kind of what the first couple of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club albums might have sounded like if that band was influenced by early Ride and Swervedriver as much as the Jesus and Mary Chain. Most of the songs feature languorous vocal harmonies like many of those first-wave shoegazer bands. If this sounds like the sort of thing you like, you can't go wrong here. (mike.09.06)
