elliott the letter ostrich
blood cape • asaurus records • 2005

Filling the heretofore unrecognized void of horror-themed lo-fi comedy indiepop comes the interestingly-spelled duo of Jhohn and Airon, recording under the inscrutable moniker Elliott the Letter Ostrich. EtLO (not to be confused with ELO) ply their trade with the usual 4-track bag of tricks, but among the cheap instruments, shy-sounding vocals, and off-kilter pop experimentation, you'll hear the occasional spooky creaky sound effect or death metal outburst, and you'll notice that the seemingly-twee lyrics are couched in vampiric and slasher-movie imagery. You'll also hear musical pastiches of Elvis and New Order. The lo-fi jokery and winking genre-hopping remind me of the early 4-track recordings of Sifl & Olly Show creators Liam Lynch and Matt Crocco, so all the EtLO guys are missing is puppets to act out their wacky songs.
