fine dining
debutantes and dilettantes • self-released • 2005

This debut from Ohio's Fine Dining displays a surprising diversity of influences. For a bunch of college-age guys, they sure do seem to love the indie/alternative rock from when I was in college, the late 80s-early 90s. The Pixies, for instance, as evident on the opening track "Santiago's Revenge" (that would be Joey, I guess?). Or Weezer, on the following track "High Speed Chase," with its crunchy power chord riffing and "oo woo" vocals. But hold on, here comes an immediate left turn in the form of the jazzy fIREHOSE-esque "Stranded." "Amory & Irony" has the complex chord patterns of an Of Montreal song, which I guess is a little more contemporary. Skipping to the end, "Afternoon Tea" has a definite "This Charming Man" jangle to it. These kids are pretty skilled, particularly nimble drummer Jerry Green, and there's a good handful of pretty catchy songs here. They don't really have the best way with words, though; their lyrics suffer from some doofy rhymes, and that band name's a real clunker. Hopefully as these guys mature they'll start to blend their range of influences together into something a little more original, and hopefully they'll start bringing some more sophistication to their lyrics too.
