Have you ever thought that what's missing from classical music is heavy metal guitars and drums? Or, conversely, have you always wished that your heavy metal could have more classical piano and cello run through a distortion pedal? This is a weird, weird disc that includes something for you if you answered "yes" to those questions, plus much, much more. For instance, "Palo Borracho" is an extended lo-fi south-of-the-border post-rock ditty, and the all-too brief "Riverpond," the only track I actually like, hearkens back to old-school Brian Eno ambient music. The album is mostly instrumental, and any singing (including from guest stars Devendra Banhart and Sierra Casady from CocoRosie) is mostly wordless. It's an esoteric and super-ambitious disc, and the musicianship and complexity of the compositions is certainly impressive, but I have a really hard time taking it seriously, partly because it's so over-the-top, and partly because I can't help thinking of Taranchula.
