Douglas Coupland is my all-time favorite author. His books are the only ones I pay full price for. Anyone else, I check Half-Price books, I check the library...but not for Doug. I can read his books over and over again, and never get bored. And I still cry when I read "Microserfs" at the end, when the Mom types that message to Karla? That's all I'll say so I don't ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it yet (and you really should!). So finally, after almost over ten years of being a huge fan, I got to meet him last night at the University Bookstore. He was doing a reading from his latest book, "Hey, Nostradamus!", which I haven't read yet, but can't wait to do so.
There's always an underlying worry when you meet someone who you admire and like so much. It's like, what if he's a jerk? What if he's pretentious? But, NO! All my worries were quickly quelled! He was so utterly charming! He was so completely down-to-earth and humble and amazingly polite! And he loves The Simpsons like we do!!! His favorite Simpsons characters are (in this order) Duffman, Cletus & Brandine, Ralph Wiggum, and his "perpetual number four" (as he put it) is the Pimply-Faced Teen! And then when he was reading from his latest book, he stopped and said, "Whoa, I just slipped into Patty & Selma's voice there..." : )
So, seriously, now that I've met him, I love him even more, and I told him this and he seriously blushed, even burying his face and jokingly walking off into the corner, before coming back with a big smile on his face and thanking me. : ) It was so cute! So everyone go buy his new book, and if he comes to your town (tour dates are on his website), go go go see him!!! : )
